Is there a good program out there for Mac for anti-virus and to protect spyware and all that stuff?

I'm looking for a free or inexpensive one that works well.

Use Firefox with NoScript extension to keep web sites from adding stuff to your drive. And, of course, never open email attachments unless you know who created the file and you were expecting to get it.

Get Spybot-Search%26Destroy. It is a freeware, lite on your systems memory and scans for spywares, adwares and trojans from your system. In also works great with the freeversion of AVG antivirus that takes care of viruses. In combination they arre deadly protection for infections.
My computer handyman reccomended and installed the free version of AVG. So far, I've had no problems. He said it's supposed to be the best. Mozilla Firefox is a firewall and is also free. I use my AT%26T through MF.

I have decided to download a free comodo firewall for my computer and also AVG free antivirus. However I have realised that AVG doesn't provide anti-spyware or anti-spam. Do I need to download another spyware protection program to stop this or does comodo give me this. Also, what kind of protection does Yahoo email give?

My computer runs fast when I am doing light work (Word, Internet, etc) But when it comes time to work with downloading a 5 min long movie from my DV camcorder and editing it on my computer it slows down to snails pace. Sometimes I have to turn it off because it freezes on me.

I got 640 mb of Memory with 353.36 of virtual memory free. I have a 2.39 GHz cpu and 7gb on my hard drive free out of 20 gb. I know I got no malware/spyware, already scanned and removed the few I had. I was thinking of clocking up my cpu, but I don't know how or if it will help.

SOLUTIONS

1.search for help.svc on ur computer using the search function in windows,then delete the file

2.run msconfig from the run menu in the START menu.then select services tab. then check hide all microsoft services

then see whether help.svc is there in the list if it is there uncheck it.or select startup tab uncheck help.svc if it is present there.

3.if all the above solutions don't work uninstall zonlabs 6 then scan ur computer with avg

The answer is yes. The program itself is perfectly safe. However, if you do not have proper virus protection it can definately bog down your machine with pop ups, adware, spyware and viruses. And in VERY rare cases possibly destroy your hard drive. If you have up to date virus protection then you should really have no worries. It will catch anything you dl, if it's contaminated, and let you know before it can damage anything. Plus, I doubt very seriously the virus guys pay a whole lot of attention to toddler music anyway.

I also have to remind you to stay away from copywrited material as dl'ing it is illegal. I know most people could care less that they're stealing, but I'm not one of them

I recently had spyware placed on my computer by a driveby hijacking. It caused pop-up ads to appear claiming my computer was infected and to click the link for a free scan. It turns out it was placed there by the company that wrote the spyware removal tool. The ploy is to infect the computer with their spyware to try to get you to buy their removal tool specifically. Isn't this extortion? Is this like mob protection money? This bug was extremely hard to remove as none of the popular spyware removal tools worked. I eventually found one that did. What would I have to prove and what would my success probabilty be?

Same here. That pop-up said my computer was hijacked. I did a trace through www.robtex.com to see who owned the crap. Yes, same company that offered to sell me the "removal" tool. If that's not racketeering, then the FBI owes an apology to Al Capone. Report It


I'd sue, but it you'd have a 50/50 chance of winning. First, you gotta know who put it on your computer.
If you have definitive proof that the company produced the spyware, then it seems to me that you have a case against them. Of course, they may have more cash than you do to fight court cases, and if you lose, you may have to pay their legal fees. However, if you're willing to accept that as a possible consequence, by all means, stand up and fight the bastards. Even better would be to find out if anyone else was affected by this, then organize with others and file a class-action lawsuit against the company.

My PC has been acting weirdly for the last 2-3 days. While accessing the net, my Firefox window closes or 60-70 Windows open at a time!

It also hangs on and off. I first thought it was because of my 256 MB RAM, but now I am suspecting virus intrusion. I have AVG Free and its fully updated with its resident shield active. I also carry a full system scan every other day. However, it has not detected anything. Nor have my 4 anti-spyware(AdAware, Ewido, SpyBot and Spyware Terminator). I was going through a recently conducted survey and it showed that AVG Free can detect only 82% of virus. BitDefender Free can do 96%, AOL-99.6%, AntiVir-92% and Avast 89%. Should I uninstall AVG and install any of those. I have their setup files, so no worries. Also, please give the address of some NICE online virus scanner. No spams, PLZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ. Sounds like a virus. You may need to reinstall essential Windows components or change your Start-Up to only activate necessary files. If it is affecting Firefox it may be hard to detect since most viruses affect IE.

Okay so I have had this really bad virus that redirected other viruses and spyware onto my computer. To remove it was difficult because to dwonload a free program I have to have internet connections and that made me get more viruses. Also theses strange pop-ups that came up that was obviously not made by the website given. So I used nearly 10 different programs to see if it removed all the viruses and spyware. I got 3 spyware 6 viruses in all. However, I don't know if it has been disinfected or not. After removing everything I removed something that says not a virus and it was low risk but I removed it anyway. Now my computer says there is a inaccesible driver or handler, theres something wrong with the registry and it might go unstable. What should I do? I already tried using the handlers and registry cd to repair or put back in the missing handlers or drivers. However, it does not work and my screen comes up blank. well this is the same problem i m having for some viruses i got i removed them but they left side effect..

if you have yr Windows CD then you can format yr pc again.. or reinstall windows.. so your computer will work like it was working when u bought first..

my bad luck is i have lost that Windows CD so i tried something else which gave me some solutions not all.. i still get message but now my computer dont freeze..

it's up to you now if u dont have that many important programs then you can reinstall yr windows or you can backup files but there is problem too u may get virus in those files..

Adssite infection - please help?

I had norton and uninstalled it since it slowed down my laptop. (I have vista on it). I loooked for other programs and found some, but not before I got adssite infection. I now run AVG 7.5, Ad-Aware, and Ad-Watch, plus I have a fire wall turned on. How do I get rid of the adssite? I uninstalled the program from my uninstall option - but it still is in my system. I read online that it reinstalls itself hidden in my system. It sends files to my appdata|local|temp location and I remove them and they keep poping back up as I delete them. Which means there is a program elsewhere.

I installed spyware doctor and it finds spyware - but wants to charge me to clean up my system. Does anyone know a free program that cleans free too. I dont want to pay for a one time deal. And, if I am going to pay, I will take my computer to my sisters computer guy to make sure its all cleaned out.

But, if anyone knows a free method - I would be very grateful.

If you don't have probs with the sites that McAfee shows red on, fair enough, but it's not trying to censor anything, it merely shows results obtained from using the site in question. A red setting doesn't always mean spyware is present, if you click on the McAfee indicator to view site details it shows why they've rated it the way they have, could be spam e-mails if you enter your address.

To go back to the censorship thing, some really hardcore porn sites show green. So I'm told!!

well yesterday i posted a question that i had gotten lots of trojan horses.

i tried spyware terminator,avira,nortan,and mcafee(which stinks like shi*t) all free versions as i cannot buy anything.

it deleted a bit i guess but there still is a bubble that says i have tons of adware.

You should not need to have to go the "Hijack This" route, with logs to be posted for experts to take you through the process.

SuperAntispyware may work; good luck. (You might have to restart after that one scans, and then rescan.)

Usually, the biggest problem with infections like yours is that they are embedded in the registry and, therefore, nothing really gets them completely cleaned out--and they return when you restart your computer.

If you have any decent anti-virus program and something useful for spyware help (SuperAntispyware certainly qualifies), do this:

Whenever I play music on itunes, my music 'skips'. Kinda like a broken record. And whenever I play videos on YouTube, they skip as well. Wow - a four gig hard drive - hardly enough to run Ubuntu although it meets the minimum requirements. If you are just messing around - give Ubuntu a try or maybe XUbuntu (lighter weight) - it is free - at least you will not get reloaded with spyware and junk. :)

I can't delete Pest Capture?

I have Windows XP. I was notified that I was infected with Trojan and other viri. It was suggested to down load various free scans. Pest Capture was my choise only because it was the first one. After download and free scan it reported that I had malware and spyware viri and I should purchase the license to continue. Since I don't like to give credit card info over the Net I declined. Now I have this Huge dialogue Pest Capture box on my screen and am unable to delete because it states the "uninstall or remove has been disabled". And it's TRUE. I went into the Control Panel to Add or Remove.....etc. and can't delete it.......A close friend suggested that I Re-Format my Windows XP but being a novice I"m not sure if I could do it. I got a price of $50 but I would really like to see if I could do it myself. It's not the cost I'd just like to try. Well, I went and looked for it in Yahoo! and found the website, NO it's not Ad-aware Se its different, but it is on "download.com" website, which is affiliated by C-Net. So there "alright" in my book, but it's up to you. Ad-aware Se is better, I have been using it for years, three or 4 so far....great program, easy and simple and runs really fast. I also have Reg Mechanic, Norton (but runs slow, and bogs my 2.4 gig down) AVG (runs a bit faster than norton) and PC Tools Antivirus (same makers of Registry Mechanic) and i still get some viruses, but I get rid of them too and keep most of them out. I have not used Adaware SE 2007 yet, but I have used the AdAware Line for years. You can get the free version from www.lavasoft.de and try it out. Like I said, I have used it for years - the free version that is. I also use Spybot Search and Destroy from www.safer-networking.org. Both scanners seem to find different things but find a lot of the same spyware, adware and malware. Additional software from www.javacoolsoftware.com would be SpywareBlaster and Spyguard. You install those two and basically forget them - except for updates. The first two you need to schedule scans or perform manual scans periodically. Hope this helps...

1)Stomp auto-starting programs. Click Start %26gt; Run and type "msconfig" at the prompt. Click the Startup tab and look at all that junk that loads when you launch your PC. Do you really need "Adobe Reader Speed Launch"? Probably not. Turn off anything else that looks useless, but be careful not to disable Windows system components.

2) Clean up the disk. Uninstall unneeded programs (especially those that run at startup and/or put something in the system tray), run Disk Cleanup, and defragment the drive. This is a good first step that will almost always take a few seconds off boot time and application loads for any computer.

3) Run a full anti-virus and anti-spyware scan. I would recommend using AVG Free Anti-virus, AVG Anti-Spyware, Spybot, Ad-Aware.

4) Clean up the registry. This is controversial, as some experts claim registry cleaners don't really help. I've seen evidence to the contrary, so I recommend doing it if you've got a major slowdown. CCleaner is free and worth running.

What does this mean? I just did a virus scan/spyware scan (McAfee and Windows Defender). I have my automatic updates all installed. McAfee firewall is on to a high level. And my internet settings are on to the recommended level. This just started to happen now... it was working fine yesterday.

This is the problem I too face sometimes. However, there is no specific answer on this from any one. Its more of a google problem I guess.. if its from our end, following are the possible reasons for this kinda issues.

As a result of using Internet I had massive problems with Spywares and viruses. I installed a toolbar and it came packaged with spyware and clutter up my browser with useless buttons. It happened quite a long time ago and I just tolerated that. But the serious problems started when I opened unknown email letter. One of virus on my computer was a really invasive spywere and made me to think seriously about doing something. I tried to delete some files I considered to be bad in a safe mode but it didn鈥檛 work. I thereafter routinely ran several antispyware programs, none of which eradicated the spyware totally. I've tried some protection systems, the free ones. As I鈥檓 not very experienced in that case I used the most typical programs. While trying different anti-viruses and anti-spyweres I downloaded the Spy-Shredder. I just wanted to put in a good word for the program. Actually it鈥檚 a great program and it helped me much. I have not had a spyware infection since I switched over to it and I haven't had any unwanted pop-ups either. I wanted to thank the guys who made the anti-spywere. I spent so many hours solving problems of my computer and trying to delete malicious stuff from it. Just love the program!

Hi, I have BT Total Broadband with the homehub which has the firewall set to the standard setting. My laptop is running like a dog and I was wondering if this is because there are conflicts with my Windows Firewall - but I don't want to turn it off without some advise first. I am running XP, Norton antivirus (I know everyone hates it and this is taking up resource, but I got 3 years free with my IBM laptop!!), Adaware SE Personal %26 Norton Spyware Scan.

So you've been taking some crap about Norton? Good! haha! OK, so it was free...so is the much better and faster Avast.

Anyway, on your computer, only run ONE software firewall. I dont know the "homehub", but it sounds like an external box - in which case it is not hurting you. If it is software (program running on your computer), disable it and only run the windows firewall. Check out your exceptions tab and disable appropriately.

Try running ccleaner (.com) and winpatrol (.com) to speed yourself up.

It's not the windows firewall do not turn it off the problem with your system is the Norton Antivirous take it off it's slowing your system to a halt. Bare in mind that Norton doesn't find viruses it only creates problems for your system as you can see. Avast is good but i have also just taken this off as it was conflicting my system making the start bar and all my icon's on the desktop dissapeared it was letting a vital virus in of which as been reported to Avast. Install Spybot, Adaware, and Avg version 7. Hope this helps..

Im having alot of pop ups on my laptop and my desktop computer things. I don't really recommend either Mcafee or Norton, as they are both bloated packages that use way too much memory causing your PC to run more slowly than it should. As far as the trial version thing goes...a trial for an antivirus program will stop allowing you to update to the latest virus definitions after the trial runs out. That means you will not be protected against any new viruses. In my opinion, there is no need to spend money on virus and spyware protection for your home PC. What is all this on my SPYBOT and this SPYWAREBOT???

I downloaded this free program thinking it was feee to scan for spyware. I scanned with thit and it pulled up things that looks like a scam just to buy this program...as when it finished scanning it sayed I have 3800 items that needed to be tended to and then it sayed I had to register and buy the program to delete these items???? Then I found the SPYBOT SEARCH AND DESTROY and it found a lot of things on registry and other things. Then it says before setup to make backup of registry keys in case something goes wrong when scanning and deleted infections. Is all this normal and safe???? Remove the software that you installed!! It's not legit, I think it is a virus too, so uninstall it now. Try going to www.download.com and download the trial version of Norton Antivirus 2007. It will help and temporarily protect your computer. And also don't click on those pop ups when they ask or tell you to install things. Good luck!

It looks a lot 'different' than many of the adware/spyware/internet security programs I have seen, including the free ones. When you do an 'update'...it wants you to pick from various weird servers that are all over the world, as to where your download updates are going to come from. What's up with that? Most of those sites, I have never heard of...some don't even look like legit sites. Does anybody else use SS%26D and see this stuff? I got it from CNet's download.com.
